Will take responsibility for COVID situation-Govt

The government claims it will take full responsibility for the COVID-19 situation in the country, although powers to decide on imposing travel restrictions and lockdown have been vested with health authorities and the Presidential Task Force on COVID-19.
Speaking during the weekly Cabinet media briefing held in Colombo today, Minister Ramesh Pathirana said the government is supporting health authorities to take appropriate decisions to contain the spread of the novel coronavirus.
Minister Pathirana said as public representatives they are supporting officials to enforce the relevant health regulations and have not intervened or prevented them from taking preventive measures.
He added no politician was involved in the decision to revise the isolation orders initially imposed to the entire Piliyandala Police area.
The Minister claimed that the decision pertaining to revising isolation orders were taken based on inputs from regional health officials.
Meanwhile, Minister Keheliya Rambukwella said the decision to impose travel restrictions are taken by the Presidential Task Force.
Minister Rambukwella said although the directives can be revised at any moment, be it this evening or tomorrow, all decisions are taken on the basis of managing the spread of the virus and ensuring the smooth functioning of the state mechanism.
He said all decisions and directives will be proportional to the prevailing COVID-19 situation in the country.
